Fit with Gin

Do you want to stay in shape? and you love to drink gin? You ask yourself “What does these two things have in common”? We’ll clear it up. Gin is not only tasty and varied, it also has several positive effects on our body. It even helps with skin diseases – did you know that? And it puts you in a good mood too! We present you the fascinating alcohol with all its advantages and amazing facts.

Is Gin healthy?

We have all read or heard about that before. With great caution, we can say: Yes, gin is low in calories and has many positive effects on our body. Gin is a high-proof alcohol that is loved by many connoisseurs and gourmets. But we don’t even know that much about the advantages… yet! But it is always important to note: everything in moderation! Too much alcohol harms the body!

Gin strengthens the immune system, because the juniper berry flavonoids contained in alcohol have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system. Flavonoids are secondary plant substances that are responsible for the coloring of plants. The substance prevents reactions of so-called “free radicals” in the human body. In other words, it means that flavonoids are cell protecting. Other positive effects are that it relieves inflammation and lowers blood pressure.

Gin has a detoxifying effect and has a disinfecting effect on the human body. For a better aroma, herbs such as coriander, sage or rosemary are often used in the production of gin. This means that the toxins are decomposed faster and washed out of the body. Juniper berries and coriander in particular ensure smooth detoxification as they stimulate kidney function.

Gin has an anti-aging effect. The high proportion of antioxidants has a supportive and an anti-aging effect on the body. The antioxidants neutralize the free radicals in our system. This slows down skin aging and we stay younger on the outside. Gin can thus help to improve the complexion and it is good for the skin – fascinating, right?

Gin is digestive. Among other things, the juniper berry is also responsible for stimulating the digestive tract. In this way, even hard-to-digest food can be processed better with the help of the berry. In addition, you can feel a draining effect. It is particularly helpful for urinary tract infections, because gin can naturally help flush out retained pollutants.

Gin cures diseases. Even back in the Middle Ages, people protected themselves against malaria with a daily glass of gin tonic. Significant health benefits can be noted, because gin is very low in histamine. Histamine plays a central role in allergic reactions in humans and is in the immune system, i.e. it is involved in the defense against foreign substances. The substance also works in the vegetation and is widespread in bacteria. This means that many foods and especially alcoholic beverages also contain histamine. But besides vodka, gin is the only alcohol with a very low content – good for the body!

The specialist Dr. Müller from Wiesbaden confirms that histamine plays a particularly important role in skin intolerance and diseases such as neurodermatitis. “Even with allergies such as hay fever, the low-histamine alcohol can have a supportive and improving effect on the body,” confirms Dr. Müller. But he emphasizes, as always with highly concentrated alcohol, that everything should be enjoyed in moderation.

But also aside from the health aspect: gin can be used very low in calories. With gourmet alcohol, you do not need heavy juices and drinks with a lot of sugar to experience a great taste. For example, gin with ginger, gin sour and gimlet are great cocktail ideas for a conscious evening – and the headache the next day is not too bad!

How healthy is Gin Tonic?

As we have already determined, gin is very low in calories and a low-histamine alcohol with some positive health aspects. But how healthy is the typical companion the “tonic water”? We’ll clear it up.

Tonic water is considered a soft drink and contains healthy and unhealthy ingredients. In addition to the obvious things like water, carbon dioxide, sugar and citric acid, the drink also contains quinine, which gives the tonic water its bitter note.

Quinine is a natural chemical compound found in the cinchona. Because of its antipyretic and analgesic effects, quinine was often used as a medicine. Quinine relaxes the muscles and is therefore often used to treat cramps. However, this health-promoting effect only applies if it is consumed to a certain extent.

Our conclusion: As it turns out, tonic water and therefore gin tonic is not the best fitness drink – that’s not surprising. What is surprising however, is how healthy the alcohol is. Many positive aspects in gin show that consumption can help the body. So treat yourself to one or two gin tonic – and even feel good about it!

We have a clear winner: the gin!

The low-calorie alcohol is typically used in cocktails or long drinks in 4cl. Whether as a short or mixed – 86 calories are by far very little. As the table shows, the tonic water makes a difference in terms of calories. But always unbeatable: the very low histamine value.

We asked ourselves: How does that look like in practice? An evening with friends, one of the guests only ordered beer, the other one gin soda. In comparison, that the beer-drinker orders probably several bottles. With 3 beers, the buddy would have to drink almost 5 gin soda to get the same calorie value – interesting right?

Another interesting comparison is the choice between wine and gin tonic. Besides the significant difference in the histamine value, the longdrink has basically a little more calories and is priced slightly higher than a glass of wine. At first, choosing wine seems to make more sense, but how many glasses would you have to drink to be “equal” with the gin tonic-drinker? During the course of the evening you can see that after a few glasses the added value of gin tonic is higher – and the price is more profitable too!
